2020 OUTBOUND EXCHANGE
The annual youth exchange between Norfolk, VA, and Wilhelmshaven, Germany, is looking for students that want to live with a German family in Wilhelmshaven for three weeks in the summer of 2020. The preliminary dates for the trip are July 16th to August 6th.
To live with a German family for three weeks is a rewarding experience that will enrich the rest of your life. You have the chance to build a friendship with someone from another country, be introduced to a new language, to new food, to a new culture, and as a result you learn how close together “worlds apart” can really be. Many former exchange participants still have contact with their host family even decades later.
We have spots available for teenagers in the 16-19 age range, especially for those who are studying German or have an interest in German culture.
OBLIGATIONS OF STUDENT FAMILIES:
The host families in Germany provide accommodations, meals, and transportation; the visiting teenagers will need to bring their own spending money. The Student is responsible for the cost of the flight, trip to and from the airport, and any miscellaneous expenses related to the travel (i.e. passport, insurance, etc.)
SISTER CITY SUPPORT:
The Sister City Association will organize the travel arrangements and collect pertinent information required by the airline. A chaperone will be travelling with the group and provide support as needed in Wilhelmshaven. The German-American Society (DAG) in Wilhelmshaven organizes major activities for the group which includes sightseeing tours, visits of local attractions, trips to surrounding areas, and concludes with two days in BERLIN. The DAG will cover many of the costs for these activities. The program will be supplemented by the host families with activities that reflect their interests.
